Spring is an exciting time for music enthusiasts! The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and all the music festival dates we’ve brazenly requested off for work are getting closer. Pretty soon, we’ll be leaving behind our 9 to 5’s to create memories that we’ll both never remember and never forget! Domefest, tucked away in the woods of western Pennsylvania, is only on its 8th year—but you’d be hard-pressed to find an individual who attended and did not make plans to come back each and every year afterward. This year, the festival will be held from May 18-20th, starting today, and there are plenty of reasons why this event seems to be one of everyone’s favorites. In no particular order, here are 10 of them! Additional information, including ticketing, can be found here.

3. IT’S A SUNNY DAY, AND YOU CAN FIND YOUR PERFECT CAMPING PLACE!

Okay, well considering it rained all weekend last year, it might not be a perfectly sunny weekend — but Domefest has camping in both wooded and non-wooded areas. Whether you prefer fluttering through the trees or flapping in the breeze, there are plenty of awesome camping spots to serve as home base for your adventures. They have 4 main camping areas— “Funk E Forest,” “Hugger’s Hollow” and “Poseidon’s Palace,” which are all wooded, or you can set up camp on “Dome Field” should you be more of a breeze flapper and less of a tree flutterer.

1.) IT’S THE PERFECT PLACE TO CELEBRATE YOUR LIFE

I know I said “in no particular order” up there, but the family-like atmosphere of Domefest is what really makes it special. If you’ve ever looked around and thought, “couldn’t we all just get along?” then this is the festival for you. There will be plenty of new faces swooping in on Thursday, but by the time everyone is packing up to leave on Sunday, you’ll be able to see a little trickle in the eye of pretty much everyone as they leave their newfound festival family. If there were ever a place to let your mind out for a run, this is it!

8.) YOU BETTER HAVE BEEN DUSTIN’ OFF YOUR (DANCING) BOOTS

To start, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong has 4 sets throughout the weekend—including a special “Under Cover” set on Saturday. In addition to that, Scrambled Greg will play a solo acoustic set on Saturday. Festival favorite Aqueous has 2 sets of music, as does Electric Love Machine. Consider The Source, Vibe & Direct, lespecial, Broccoli Samurai and Strange Machines will keep you grooving ’till your money’s all gone (or it’s time to go home—whichever comes first). I mean, what else would you do at a music festival?

10.) WAIT. WAS THAT AN EMU?

Oh right. Dress up in weird costumes. As if Domefest needed to cram more silliness into the weekend, each night is themed. Thursday’s theme is “Go Green,” emphasizing the environmentally-conscious nature of the festival. Friday night is a pajama party. Ridiculousness will ensue as feathered festival-goers flutter around, cooing in various onesies and bathrobes. The actual number of onesies ruined inside the porta-potties at sketch-o’clock remains to be seen. However they really saved the best for last, as Saturday is Outrageous Outfits day. Literally anything (or nothing?) goes. If watching the melting lights isn’t enough, you very well may find yourself dancing next to a glitter-covered octopus in a duck hat. Just saying—it could happen. It probably will, so don’t act surprised.

5.) THERE’S A FLOCKING WEDDING ON THE HORIZON!

This year marks the first-ever Domefest wedding! Scott and Kathy, long-time members of The Flock, will tie the knot at 10AM on Friday, and we all get to watch them say “You got me so excited that I found you in my life.” What a special moment. 10AM is pretty early, though. Or late, considering the next point.

4.) LATE NIGHT SETS WILL ENSURE YOU’RE STILL KICKIN’ BY SUNRISE

Come on, you didn’t come here to sleep, did you? Because there is amazing music going on all night long – Aqueous has a late night set on Thursday, LitZ and Mateo Monk will be keeping everyone raging on Friday, and Saturday night lespecial and Electric Love Machine will keep the music humming until you need to pack up and fly back to your coop.

2.) MAKING SURE WE CAN WALK OUTSIDE FOR YEARS TO COME

Music festivals are a lot of fun, but they can take a significant toll on the environment. Domefest is taking measures to reduce its carbon footprint, including waiving the $10 parking fee for cars carrying 3 or more people. The information section on their website also advises campers to bring reusable items over disposable items. They even have an on-site trash sorting station where smokers can pick up pocket ashtrays in an effort to keep cigarette butts off the ground. Which you’ll definitely want to do because…

6.) THE FESTIVAL GROUNDS ARE SACRED

For the second year in a row, everyone will be flocking to a little place called Fort Royale Farm, located on Will’s Mountain just outside of Bedford, PA. This is a gorgeous, private venue, and it’s probably one of Pennsylvania’s best-kept secrets. It’s tucked away in the mountains, the landscape is incredibly diverse, the stage is nestled in the woods, and the light show creates the feeling that you’re seeing music in a magical forest. Should you decide you want to jump into the water, there is a creek on the grounds as well. However, keep in mind the festival is in mid-May, and I know the water is fuckin’ cold.

9.) SO MANY WAYS TO FIND YOUR PEACE OF MIND

During the daytime, there are numerous workshops held throughout the weekend. Yoga is held each morning at 11AM in the dome, and there are numerous options for little birds who want to learn how to fly. Acroyoga, aerial hoop, and aerial arts workshops will ensure you don’t need to keep your feet on the ground! There is a mandatory fire safety meeting for anyone wishing to play with fire during the weekend, and there are also juggling, hooping and poi workshops for those wishing to up their flow arts game!

7.) THE PURPOSE OF THE SHOW IS RAGING WITH THE BAND

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong brings a party to any festival they play, but this is their festival. Watching all the Pigeons running around with walkie talkies trying to oversee this thing is reason enough to go. There will be ridiculous antics and general wookery to be watched all weekend long! Without a doubt, this year’s Domefest is going to be a completely unforgettable weekend. We’ll be moonwalking straight to the stars – let’s have a safe and memorable weekend, Flock!
